Al Stewart

Glasgow native Al Stewart began his career playing guitar in Tony Blackburn's band the Sabres, and moved from there to the London folk club scene. After an unsuccessful single on Decca, "The Elf" (which featured Jimmy Page on guitar), Stewart signed with CBS and, beginning in 1967, released a series of albums largely consisting of introspective, confessional love songs. Love Chronicles was the only one to be released in the U.S., and the autobiographical title track, which detailed Stewart's romantic involvements, attracted a bit of attention for the singer's use of the word "f*cking" in a song with supposed artistic credibility. On 1974's Past, Present and Future, Stewart switched gears, exploring his fascination with historical tales, and was rewarded with his first U.S. chart album. Modern Times was even more successful, and Year of the Cat was an unqualified hit, selling over a million copies and spawning the Top Ten title single. Time Passages duplicated both feats, but Stewart's creativity dried up soon afterward, and difficulties over his contract and change of labels prevented him from releasing any new material until 1984. Russians and Americans was highly political, but sales were disappointing. Even so, Stewart recorded and toured sporadically in the late '80s and '90s while devoting time to his hobby of wine collecting. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide.

The Dark and The Rolling Sea

Oh you slipped away from the harbor site
In the morning bright and clear
And your sails were filled with the rising wind
And you laughed for all to hear
But you never glanced at the ragged dance
Of your lovers on the kay
Don’t call on them When the winds rise high
On the dark and the rolling sea

Oh you set your course for the furthest shores
And you never once looked back
And the flag you flew was a pirate cross
On a field of velvet black
And those landsmen who
You but lately knew
Were left stranded on the lee
Don’t call on them When the storm clouds rise
On the dark and the rolling sea

Oh I have no need of a chart or creed
You told your waiting crew
For the winds of chance
Will bare us straight
And you spoke as though you knew
So you paid no mind to the warning signs
As you gave your words so free
Don’t change your tack When the timbers crack
On the dark and the rolling sea

Now the thunder rails
In the great mainsails
And the stars desert the skies
And the rigging strains
As the hands of rain
Reach down to wash your eyes
And your oarsman stands
With his knife in hand
And his eyes spell mutiny
Don’t call my name When your ship goes down
On the dark and the rolling sea

Modern Times

Hello old friend
What a strange coincidence to find you
Its been fifteen years since we last met
But I still recognized you
So call the barman over here
And let us fill our glasses
And drink a toast to olden times
Where all our memories lie
Where all our memories lie

Do you remember
The time when we were young
Lowly lowly low
Outside the window
The frosty moonlight hung
On the midnight snow
So we pulled our scarves around our faces in the night
Huddled on the doorsteps where the ferry lights shone bright
Singing Christmas carols while our breath hung in the light

It all comes back like yesterday
It almost seems like yesterday

Do you remember
The changes as we grew
Slowly, slowly, slow
Sneaking in the back way
Into movies after school
For the evening show
Chasing skinny blue-jeaned girls across the building site
Checking out the dance floor while the band played hold me tight
See the blonde one over there I bet she’d be alright
It all comes back like yesterday
It almost seems like yesterday

While I talked he sat and he never made a sound
Starring at the glass beside me
Hey old friend tell me what’s on your mind
The silence grows on you like ivy, ivy

Do you remember
The church across the sands
Holy, holy, ho
You stood outside and planned to travel to the lands
Where the pilgrims go
So you packed your world up inside a canvas sack
Set off down the highway with your rings and kerouwack
Someone said they saw you in Nepal a long time back

Tell me why you look away
Don’t you have a word to say
He said, I don’t remember
I don’t wanna remember
In fact I’ve heard too much already
I don’t want to think
Just leave me here to drink
Wrapped up in the warmth of New York City
Oh oh it seems you just don’t know
And you just don’t understand me
Got no use for the tricks of Modern Times
They tangle all my thoughts like ivy, ivy

So I left him and I went out to the street
Lowly, lowly, low
Where the red light girls were coming up to me
Forty dollar show
All across the cities heart the lights were coming on
The hotel lift softly hummed a Cole Porter song
If I went to look for him
I knew he would be gone

A picture card of yesterday
A photograph of yesterday
And far off in a deserted part of town
The shadows like a silent army
Fluttered off the rooms in pools of blue and brown
And stuck to all the walls like ivy, ivy, ivy

Eyes of Nostradamus

In the east the wind is blowing the boats across the sea
And their sails will fill the morning and their cries ring out to me
Oh, Oh
Oh, the more it changes, the more it stays the same
And the hand just re-arranges the players in the game
Oh, Oh

Oh, I had a dream, it seemed I stood alone
And the veil of all the years
Goes sinking from my eyes like a stone

A king shall fall and put to death by the English parliament shall be
Fire and plague to London come in the year of six and twenties three
An emperor of France shall rise who will be born near Italy
His rule shall cost his empire dear, Napoloron his name shall be
From Castile does Franco come and the Government driven out shall be
An English king seeks divorce, and from his throne cast down is he
One named Hister shall become a captain of Greater Germany
No law does this man observe and bloody his rise and fall shall be

Man, man, your time is sand, your ways are leaves upon the sea
I am the eyes of Nostradamus, all your ways are known to me
Man, man, your time is sand, your ways are leaves upon the sea
I am the eyes of Nostradamus, all your ways are known to me

In the new lands of America three brothers now shall come to power
Two alone are born to rule but all must die before their hour
Two great men yet brothers not make the north united stand
Its power be seen to grow, and fear possess the eastern lands
Three leagues from the gates of Rome a Pope named Pol is doomed to die
A great wall that divides a city at this time is cast aside
These are the signs I bring to you to show you when the time is nigh
Man, man, your time is sand, your ways are leaves upon the sea
I am the eyes of Nostradamus, all your ways are known to me

Roads To Moscow

They crossed over the border the hour before dawn
Moving in lines through the day
Most of our planes were destroyed on the ground where they lay
Waiting for orders we held in the wood - word from the front never came
By evening the sound of the gunfire was miles away
Ah, softly we move through the shadows, slip away through the trees
Crossing their lines in the mists in the fields on our hands and our knees
And all that I ever was able to see
The fire in the air glowing red silhouetting the smoke on the breeze

All summer they drove us back through the Ukraine
Smolensk and Viasma soon fell
By autumn we stood with our backs to the town of Orel
Closer and closer to Moscow they came - riding the wind like a bell
General Guderian stands at the crest of the hill
Winter brought with her the rains, oceans of mud filled the roads
Gluing the tracks of their tanks to the ground while the sky filled with snow
And all that I ever was able to see
The fire in the air glowing red silhouetting the snow on the breeze

In the footsteps of Napoleon the shadow figures stagger through the winter
Falling back before the gates of Moscow,
Standing in the wings like an avenger
And far away behind their lines the partisans are stirring in the forest
Coming unexpectedly upon their outposts, growing like a promise
You'll never know, you'll never know
Which way to turn, which way to look, you'll never see us
As we're stealing through the blackness of the night,
You'll never know, you'll never hear us

And the evening sings in a voice of amber, the dawn is surely coming
The morning roads leads to Stalingrad, and the sky is softly humming
Two broken Tigers on fire in the night flicker their souls to the wind
We wait in the lines for the final approach to begin
It's been almost four years that I've carried a gun
At home it will almost be spring
The flames of the Tigers are lighting the road to Berlin
Ah, quickly we move through the ruins that bow to the ground
The old men and children they send out to face us, they can't slow us down
And all that I ever was able to see
The eyes of the city are opening now it's the end of the dream

I'm coming home, I'm coming home,
Now you can taste it in the wind, the war is over
And I listen to the clicking of the train wheels as we roll across the border
And now they ask me of the time
When I was caught behind their lines and taken prisoner
"They only held me for a day, a lucky break", I say;
They turn and listen closer
I'll never know, I'll never know
Why I was taken from the line and all the others
To board a special train and journey deep into the heart of holy Russia
And it's cold and damp in the transit camp, and the air is still and sullen
And the pale sun of October whispers the snow will soon be coming
And I wonder when I'll be home again and the morning answers "Never"
And the evening sighs and the steely Russian skies go on forever

Alanis Morrisette

A young voice singing the confessional, unadulterated songs of an old soul describes the works of Alanis Morissette. The intensity and honestly in her singing and songwriting has made her one of Canada’s most successful music sensations ever.

Born and raised in Ottawa, Morissette played the piano and wrote her own songs before joining the popular Canadian children’s program You Can’t Do That On Television. With profits earned from her television series she recorded the independent single “Fate Stay With Me" when she was just ten years old. A record deal with MCA/Canada led to her debut album Alanis Morissette, which was released in 1991. This release, a collection of dance tunes, went platinum and won Morissette a Juno. However, the release in 1995 of Jagged Little Pill showed a more mature, introspective Alanis Morissette whose release ultimately sold over 15 million albums and garnered her four Grammys.

Hand In My Pocket

I'm broke but I'm happy
I'm poor but I'm kind
I'm short but I'm healthy, yeah
I'm high but I'm grounded
I'm sane but I'm overwhelmed
I'm lost but I'm hopeful baby

What it all comes down to
Is that everything's gonna be fine fine fine
I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is giving a high five

I feel drunk but I'm sober
I'm young and I'm underpaid
I'm tired but I'm working, yeah
I care but I'm restless
I'm here but I'm really gone
I'm wrong and I'm sorry baby

What it all comes down to
Is that everything's gonna be quite alright
Cause I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is flicking a cigarette

What it all comes down to
Is that I haven't got it all figured out just yet
'Cause I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is giving a peace sign

I'm free but I'm focused
I'm green but I'm wise
I'm hard but I'm friendly, baby
I'm sad but I'm laughing
I'm brave but I'm chicken shit
I'm sick but I'm pretty, baby

And what it all boils down to
Is that no one's really got it figured out just yet
But I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is playing the piano
What it all comes down to my friends, yeah
Is that everything's just fine fine fine
Cause I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is hailing a taxi cab

Thank U

How 'bout getting off these antibiotics
How 'bout stopping eating when I'm full up
How 'bout them transparent dangling carrots
How 'bout that ever elusive kudo

Thank you India
Thank you terror
Thank you disillusionment
Thank you frailty
Thank you consequence
Thank you thank you silence

How 'bout me not blaming you for everything
How 'bout me enjoying the moment for once
How 'bout how good it feels to finally forgive you
How 'bout grieving it all one at a time

Thank you india
Thank you terror
Thank you disillusionment
Thank you frailty
Thank you consequence
Thank you thank you silence

The moment I let go of it was the moment
I got more than I could handle
The moment I jumped off of it
Was the moment I touched down

How 'bout no longer being masochistic
How 'bout remembering your divinity
How 'bout unabashedly bawling your eyes out
How 'bout not equating death with stopping

Thank you India
Thank you providence
Thank you disillusionment
Thank you nothingness
Thank you clarity
Thank you thank you silence

Yeah yeah
Ahh ohhh
Ahhh ho oh
Ahhh ho ohhhhhh
Yeaahhhh yeahh

Uninvited

Like anyone would be
I am flattered by your fascination with me
Like any hot-blooded woman
I have simply wanted an object to crave

But you, you're not allowed
You're uninvited
An unfortunate slight
Must be strangely exciting
To watch the stoic squirm
Must be somewhat heartening
To watch shepherd meet shepherd

But you you're not allowed
You're uninvited
An unfortunate slight
Like any uncharted territory
I must seem greatly intriguing
You speak of my love like
You have experienced love like mine before

But this is not allowed
You're uninvited
An unfortunate slight
I don't think you unworthy
I need a moment to deliberate.

You Learn

I recommend getting your heart trampled on to anyone, yeah
I recommend walking around naked in your living room, yeah
Swallow it down ( what a jagged little pill )
It feels so good ( swimming in your stomach )
Wait until the dust settles

You live you learn
You love you learn
You cry you learn
You lose you learn
You bleed you learn
You scream you learn

I recommend biting off more than you can chew to anyone
I certainly do
I recommend sticking your foot in your mouth at any time
Feel free
Throw it down ( the caution blocks you from the wind )
Hold it up ( to the rays )
You wait and see when the smoke clears

You live you learn
You love you learn
You cry you learn
You lose you learn
You bleed you learn
You scream you learn

Wear it out ( the way a three-year-old would do )
Melt it down ( you're gonna have to eventually anyway )
The fire trucks are coming up around the bend

You live you learn
You love you learn
You cry you learn
You lose you learn
You bleed you learn
You scream you learn
You grieve you learn
You choke you learn
You laugh you learn
You choose you learn
You pray you learn
You ask you learn
You live you learn

Alice In Chains

Alice In Chains formed in 1987 with members Layne Staley (vocals), Jerry Cantrell (guitar), Mike Starr (bass) and Sean Kinney (drums). They signed to Columbia in 1989 and were to be promoted as a heavy metal band. Alice In Chains first release was 1990's We Die Young EP, and the title song became a hit on metal radio. Their debut album was Facelift. The song "Man In The Box" became an MTV hit and the album went gold.

For the release of the mostly acoustic EP Sap in 1991, Alice in Chains were promoted as an alternative group due to the Seattle grunge scene's commercial rise. The hit song "Would?", from the movie Singles, preceded their next album, 1992's Dirt. The album received critical raves and eventually went triple platinum. Mike Starr left after the release of Dirt and was replaced former Ozzy Osbourne bassist Michael Inez. Their 1994 EP Jar Of Flies became the first EP to hit Number 1 on the US album charts. The band did not tour following the release of the EP and it was rumored this was because of Staley's heroin addiction. Staley did participate in the super group, Mad Season, who played some concerts and released the Above album in 1995. Also in 1995 Alice in Chains returned with a self titled album, and it was another Number 1. Again they did not tour but gave their first concert in three years in 1996 on MTV Unplugged. The performance was released as another successful album.

Alice in Chains hadn't officially broken up but Cantrell released a solo album, Boggy Depot, in 1998. It was followed by an Alice In Chains box set, compilation album and live collection. A second Cantrell solo album in 2002. Later that year, the inactive band ended when Layne Staley died of a drug overdose.

Down In A Hole

Bury Me Softly In This Womb
I Give This Part Of Me For You
Sand Rains Down And Here I Sit
Holding Rare Flowers
In A Tomb.....In Bloom

Down In A Hole And I Don't Know
If I Can Be Saved
See My Heart I Decorate It
Like A Grave
You Don't Understand Who They
Thought I Was Supposed To Be
Look At Me Now A Man
Who Won't Let Himself Be

Down In A Hole
Feeling So Small
Down In A Hole, Losin' My Soul
Down In A Hole, Losin' Control
I'd Like To Fly
But My Wings Have Been So Denied

Down In A Hole And They've Put All
The Stones In Their Place
I've Eaten The Sun So My Tongue
Has Been Burned Of The Taste
I Have Been Guilty
Of Kicking Myself In The Teeth
I Will Speak No More
Of My Feelings Beneath

Oh I Want To Be Inside Of You

Down In A Hole, Losin' My Soul
Down In A Hole, Feelin' So Small
Down In A Hole, Losin' My Soul
Down In A Hole, Out Of Control

I'd Like To Fly
But My Wings Have Been So Denied

Your Decision

Time to change has come and gone
Watched your fears become your god

Its your decision

Overwhelmed you chose to run
Apathetic to the stunned

Its your decision

You feed the fire that burned us all
When you lied
To feel the pain that spurred you on
Black inside

No one plans to take the path that takes you lower
And here you stand before us all and say its over
Its over

It might seem an afterthought
Yes it hurts to know you're bought

Its your decision

You feed the fire that burned us all
When you lied
To feel the pain that spurs you on
Black inside

No one plans to take the path that takes you lower
And here you stand before us all and say its over
Its over

Tied To The Whipping Post

I been run down, I been lied to,
I dont know why I let that mean woman make me a fool.
She took all my money, wrecked my new car.
Now shes with one of my goodtime buddies,
Theyre drinkin in some crosstown bar.

Sometimes I feel, sometimes I feel,
Like I been tied to the whipping post,
Tied to the whipping post,
Tied to the whipping post,
Oh lord, I feel like Im dyin.

My friends tell me, that Ive been such a fool,
And I have to stand by and take it baby, all for lovin you.
Drown myself in sorrow, and I look at what youve down.
But nothin seems to change, the bad times stay the same,
And I cant run.

Sometimes I feel, sometimes I feel,
Like I been tied to the whipping post
Tied to the whipping post,
Tied to the whipping post,
Oh lord, I feel like Im dyin.

Sometimes I feel, sometimes I feel,
Like I been tied to the whipping post
Tied to the whipping post,
Tied to the whipping post,
Oh lord, I feel like Im dyin.

Amanda Marshall

Born: August 29, 1972

Amanda Marshall was born and raised in Toronto area. Her childhood goal had always been to be involved in the music business in whatever capacity she could. With this in mind she became singular in purpose and enrolled in many artistic programs, such as the Toronto Conservatory Of Music.

While doing the Queen Street bar scene as a performer in her teens she hooked up with guitarist Jeff Healey who was impressed enough with her voice to take her on tour with him as his opening act despite having little experience or a record on the radio

While on tour Marshall attracted the interest of Columbia Records who offered her a record deal at the ripe old age of 19. She would, in turn, turn them down flat, citing a lack of experience that might come back to haunt her later in life.

She continued developing her live repertoire of cover tunes and intense performing with visits to Kingswood Music Theatre and Molson Park in Barrie on multi-artist bills. She's also frequented MuchMusic just to keep the exposure up.

Eventually she felt comfortable enough to begin recording and decided to hook up with award winning Alannah Myles songwriter David Tyson to work up some original material in California. Ironically, she once again attracted a deal from Sony Music. Marshall also augmented the record with other tunes written by ex-Arrows Dean McTaggert, Christopher Ward and Marc Jordan.

Her album was released late in 1996 and lingered on the strength of the first single "Birmingham". By absolute chance Elton John picked up the disc from the import bin at HMV in London, England and really liked the album.

While making an appearance on the Rosie O'Donnell show, John mentioned some of the new music he was listening to and mentioned Amanda Marshall (whom he thought was American). O'Donnell's people tracked Marshall down and had her appear on the show.

It launched her career and a phone call from Elton John while she was touring was the start of a sudden instant success story. Radio immediately jumped on this record that had been recommended by the hit-master Elton John himself.

The album has gone on to spawn 6 hit singles (Let It Rain, Birmingham, Beautiful Goodbye, Dark Horse, Fall From Grace and Sitting On Top Of The World) across Canada. Also, her success has managed her to travel a lot. She's done a tour with Tom Cochrane, a headlining tour across Australia, Europe and Japan; and a sold out headlining tour of Canada in the Spring of 97. More recently, she's been the opening act for John Mellencamp's U.S. tour.

CBC-TV feted the lady with her own hour long television special and the album had racked up a series of awards. The long-overdue sophomore effort, 'Tuesday's Child', finally arrived on May 25, 1999, powered by the first single, "Love Lift Me". Marshall took on a much-increased songwriting role, co-writing all but one of the album's 13 songs.

Last Exit To Eden

The walls are thin here in this motel room
Some fool is raging overhead
He's preaching the gospel according to
Johnnie Walker Red
Four hundred miles talking to myself
Me and your memory end up here
I tell myself I'm gonna be alright
But it's still not clear

Chorus:
Did I just miss
The last exit to Eden
Is this the only love I'll know
Like a Judas kiss
Did my heart betray me
Back on the road I never chose

There are some sins that you can justify
But not the one I'm guilty of
I had a choice one last chance ago
But I turned my back on love

Chorus

I can hear the man upstairs, he's crying out
'Fall on you knees, the end is near'
We both may need a saviour, tonight I fear that mine
Is the one that I left waiting far from here

Chorus

Did I just miss
The last exit to Eden
Did I just miss
My only way out of here
Did I just miss
The last exit to Eden
Did I just miss
My only way out

Dark Horse

Indian summer
Abilene
You were new in town
I was nineteen
And sparks flew
They called us crazy
Behind our backs
"Romantic fools"
We just let them laugh
Because we knew
It may be a long shot
We may be lonely down the line
But love knows no reason
And I won't let them make up my mind

My money's riding on this dark horse, baby
My heart is sayin' it's the lucky one
And it's true color's gonna shine through someday
If we let this
Let this dark horse run

Stars are brighter
In a desert sky
No need to wonder
Or justify
Where this will lead
I wear your locket
Our picture's inside
Inscription says, "The joy's in the ride"
And I believe
Something so sacred
Is something worth this kind of fight
Cause love knows no patience
You can't please everyone all the time

My money's riding on this dark horse, baby
My heart is sayin' it's the lucky one
And it's true color's gonna shine through someday
If we let this
Let this dark horse run

So rare
So sweet
Together baby
We can be free

My money's riding on this dark horse, baby
My heart is sayin' it's the lucky one
And it's true color's gonna shine through someday
If we let this
Let it run baby
My money's riding on this dark horse, baby
My heart is sayin' it's the lucky one
And it's true color's gonna shine through someday
If we let this
Let this dark horse run
Indian Summer
Abiline
You were new in town
I was nineteen

Deportees

The crops are all in and the peaches are rotting
The oranges are piled in their creosote dumps
They're flying you back to the Mexico border
To take all their money to wade back again

My father's own father, he waded that river
They took all the money he made in his life
My brothers and sister come working the fruit trees
And they road the trucks till they took down and died.

Goodbye to my Juan, goodbye Roselita
Adios me amigos, Jesus e Maria
You won't have a name when you ride the big airplane
And all they will call you will be deportees

Some of us are illegal and others not wanted
Our work contracts out and we have to move on
It's six hundred miles to the Mexico border
They chase us like outlaws, like rustlers, and thieves

We’ve died in your hills and we’ve died on your deserts
We’ve died in your valleys, we’ve died on your plains
We’ve died in your trees and we’ve died in your bushes
Both sides of the river we’ve died just the same.

Goodbye to my Juan, goodbye Roselita
Adios me amigos, Jesus e Maria
You won't have a name when you ride the big airplane
All they will call you will be deportees

The skyplane caught fire over Los Gatos Canyon
Like a fireball of lightning it shook all our hills
Who are these dear friends all scattered like dry leaves?
The radio said, "They are just deportees

Is this the best way we can grow our big orchards?
Is this the best way we can grow our good fruit?
To fall like dry leaves and rot on your topsoil
And be known by no name except deportees

Goodbye to my Juan, goodbye Roselita
Adios me amigos, Jesus e Maria
You won't have a name when you ride the big airplane
All they will call you will be deportees

The City of New Orleans

Riding on the City of New Orleans,
Illinois Central Monday morning rail
Fifteen cars and fifteen restless riders,
Three conductors and twenty-five sacks of mail.
All along the southbound odyssey
The train pulls out at Kankakee
Rolls along past houses, farms and fields.
Passin' trains that have no names,
Freight yards full of old black men
And the graveyards of the rusted automobiles.

Good morning America how are you?
Don't you know me I'm your native son,
I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans,
I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done.

Dealin' card games with the old men in the club car.
Penny a point ain't no one keepin' score.
Pass the paper bag that holds the bottle
Feel the wheels rumblin' 'neath the floor.
And the sons of pullman porters
And the sons of engineers
Ride their father's magic carpets made of steel.
Mothers with their babes asleep,
Are rockin' to the gentle beat
And the rhythm of the rails is all they feel.

Nighttime on The City of New Orleans,
Changing cars in Memphis, Tennessee.
Half way home, we'll be there by morning
Through the Mississippi darkness
Rolling down to the sea.
And all the towns and people seem
To fade into a bad dream
And the steel rails still ain't heard the news.
The conductor sings his song again,
The passengers will please refrain
This train's got the disappearing railroad blues.

Good night, America, how are you?
Don't you know me I'm your native son,
I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans,
I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done.
